How Huntington County sells delinquent taxes
Tax certificate sale (lien)
- Run by
- Huntington County Treasurer's Office. SRI Incorporated publishes and administers the county's tax sale schedule, and the Treasurer's own department page sends tax sale visitors to SRI.
- Frequency
- annual
- Typical timing
- SRI's Huntington County page lists one scheduled tax sale, shown as "Tax Sale, Wednesday, September 30, 2026, In-person". The sale record gives a start time of 10:00 AM and a location of the GAR Room on the second floor of the courthouse. Only the current year's date is posted, so confirm the following year's date with the Treasurer's office.
Registration and deposit
No county-specific bidder registration page is published. The Treasurer's department page routes tax sale questions to SRI Incorporated, and SRI's Huntington County page lists a support line of (800) 800-9588 and [email protected]. Because bidding takes place in the courthouse, confirm registration steps, deadlines, and required affidavits with the Treasurer's office or SRI before the sale date.
Huntington County's annual tax sale is conducted in person at the courthouse, not online, so no auction platform URL applies. SRI Incorporated does operate an online auction platform, Zeus, at zeusauction.com for other jurisdictions, but Huntington County's tax sale listing carries no Zeus reference at all, so treat any claim of online bidding for this particular sale with caution and verify with the office. As of late July 2026 no parcel list had been posted yet for the September 30, 2026 sale; SRI publishes the property list closer to the sale date. SRI's Huntington County page also carries a separate Certificate Sales tab for the county commissioners' certificate sale, which currently reads that none is scheduled in the system. The monthly in-person sheriff's foreclosure auction at 332 E State St is a different sale and is not the tax lien sale. In person at the Huntington County Courthouse, GAR Room, second floor. No online bidding platform is listed for this sale.
From lien to deed
Indiana holds no general public tax deed auction. Once the redemption period runs out, the certificate holder files a verified petition in the same court that entered the judgment of sale, and the court directs the county auditor to issue the deed. That petition must be filed no later than three months after the redemption period expires, or the purchaser's lien terminates. One narrow exception exists: real property a county, city, or town executive has certified as vacant or abandoned is auctioned separately, and there the county auditor deeds fee simple title straight to the highest bidder with no right of redemption.
Over-the-counter (leftover) purchases
Parcels that draw no bid at the treasurer's tax sale pass to the county executive, which acquires a lien for the minimum sale price and receives a tax sale certificate. The county executive may then adopt a resolution and offer those certificates at a separate advertised public sale, often called the commissioners' certificate sale, priced below the minimum bid that failed at the tax sale. Notice runs once a week for three consecutive weeks with the final advertisement at least 30 days before the sale. This is a scheduled sale rather than a walk-in list, and redemption on a certificate bought this way is 120 days. Check the county auditor page for the next commissioners' certificate sale date.

Notes for Huntington County
- The county government site has no standalone tax sale page of its own. Both the county A to Z index and the Treasurer's department page list Tax Sales as a link out to SRI Incorporated, which is where the county's sale schedule actually lives.
- The Huntington County Auditor issues the tax deed after the redemption period. The Auditor is listed as Jill M. Landrum, 260-358-4805.
- The sale record gives the bidding location as the GAR Room on the second floor of the courthouse. County offices, including the Treasurer in Room 104, are at 201 N Jefferson St, Huntington, IN 46750.
- The Treasurer is listed as Brenda Hamilton. Office hours are posted as 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- Property tax due dates for 2026 are posted as May 11 and November 10. The Treasurer's page notes that partial payments do not stop a parcel from becoming subject to tax sale when amounts are delinquent.
- Huntington County's sheriff foreclosure auctions are also held in person, at 332 E State St, on a roughly monthly cadence, and are separate from the tax lien sale.
Indiana statewide rules
- Redemption
- The standard period is one year after the date of the treasurer's tax sale. Several tracks run 120 days instead: a certificate bought at the county executive's certificate sale, a lien the county executive holds that was never sold on, a sale to a purchasing agency qualified under IC 36-7-17 or IC 36-7-17.1, a certificate the county executive assigns to another political subdivision, and a parcel that was not offered at the tax sale at all. Property on the county auditor's vacant and abandoned list carries no right of redemption after its sale. A county treasurer may also extend redemption by agreement with the owner, in which case the extended period ends one year after the date of that agreement.
- Surplus proceeds
- The treasurer applies the payment first to the taxes, assessments, penalties, and costs in the minimum bid, then to other delinquent property taxes, then deposits the remainder in a tax sale surplus fund. The owner of record at the time the parcel was certified for sale, or the purchaser on a redemption, may file a verified claim against that fund. Unclaimed surplus transfers to the county general fund three years after it was received.
A tax deed does not convey marketable title. Most buyers file a quiet title action before they can resell or insure the property. See the due diligence guide.
